The second part of our film-strip is devoted to Australia and New Zealand. These two countries are situated in the southern hemisphere. They have summer when we in the northern hemisphere have winter, and winter when we have summer. And in these countries the climate becomes warmer if we travel from the south to the north because the equator is to the north from them.

Australia is an island continent situated south-east of Asia between the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

The Australian Commonwealth occupies the whole of the continent and the island of Tasmania.

The country is mostly a plain. There are mountains only in the east and south, which form the Eastern Highlands stretching from Cape York to Tasmania.

In the south-east Mount Kosciusko in the Australian Alps (7.328 feet high) is the highest point on the continent. Around Kosciusko and in Tasmania there are snow-fields in winter, much visited by ski enthusiasts.

The Darling. The greatest rivers are the Murray and the Darling in the south-east of the continent.

There are many rivers which do not reach the sea but fall into Lake Eyre in South Australia. The lake itself is usually a dry salt plain in hot summers.

The climate of the country varies from warm to subtropical. During the summer months the north-western section of the continent has temperature of over 26,5°C.

The climate here is very dry, and more than half of Australia gets too little rain for any farming except sheep-farming in good years.

In these years there are beautiful plants, bright flowers and green grass in the west but only for a very short period of time.

The tropical forests In the north the winds from the sea bring heavy monsoon rainfalls in tropical summer.

The tropical forests in the north and north-east are displaced by savannah or grassland.

The grasslands in the east form one of the most valuable regions in Australia and include the rich grass country of the Murray-Darling basin.

The south-east is covered with forests of eucalyptus and other evergreen trees. Koala that feed on eucalyptus leaves live there.

There are two big hot deserts and some small ones in the central and western parts of the continent.

The animals of Australia are very numerous and some of them including the kangaroo, the dingo, the koala, the duck-bill and the echidna are not found in any other country.

Sheep and rabbits were brought to Australia from England. Rabbits have now increased greatly and people kill them because they eat too much grass.

New Zealand is situated south-east of Australia and consists of three large and many small islands. The biggest of the islands is South Island, North Island is smaller and Stewart Island is the smallest.

New Zealand Is a mountainous country. There are mountains on both the larger islands.

The snow-capped peak of Mount Cook (South Island) is called “Cloud in the Skies” by the Maoris, the native population of New Zealand.

There are many lakes in New Zealand. The biggest of the lakes, Taupo, in the North Island, is volcanic in origin.

The climate here is warm and nearly all the country is well watered. The north of North Island is subtropical but not very hot.

You see that our planet, the Earth, is beautiful. Mighty are its oceans and seas, great are its rivers and lakes, wonderful are its plants and animals. But remember that nuclear war can destroy our Earth. That's why we must take care of our planet for the sake of peace in the whole world.
