At that time there were men who roamed about the country, and stopped now at one place, now at another. They sang long songs about famous heroes and great events. These men were called “bards”. People loved to listen to their songs and stories very much.

When people learnt to write, books appeared. They were written by hand and it took a very long time to write a whole book with a pen. For many, many years the number of books in the world was very small.

Years passed. More and more books were printed. They became very important in the life of the people. Books are our friends and teachers. What stories and tales do you like to listen to? What kind of books do you like to read?

Кадр 8

My name is Olya. I cannot read. But my Granny often reads to me. Look at these books. I like them very much.

Кадр 9

My name is Nina. I am ten. I am very fond of reading fairy tales. My favourite tale is “Cinderella”. In the beginning of it I am very sorry for the girl.

Кадр 10

I like the happy end of this tale because Cinderella is really very nice, kind and industrious.

Кадр 11

I am Kate and I am 12. I think that “Beauty and the Beast” is the most wonderful fairy tale. I like Beauty because she is a very good daughter. She loves her father. And I like her for her kindness to the Beast.

Кадр 12

Look at these books of tales. Translate their titles. Have you read them in Russian?

Кадр 13

My name is Nick. I am very fond of wild animals and birds. Of course there are not many of them in Great Britain but they are very nice. That's why I am very fond of that kind of books. And do you like to read about animals?

Кадр 14

I learn from this book about life of seals and deer, squirrels and otters, swallows and gulls, rooks and robins.

Many children like to read about travellers and their adventures. What are the most famous books by English writers about it?

Кадр 17

Now I am going to describe the characters of the books I like very much. What are their titles? Who wrote them?

Кадр 18

Who is she? I like her because she is strict and kind. She is clever and full of wonder-ful ideas. She can make children happy.

Кадр 19

Who is he? He is lively and brave. Sometimes he is naughty and lazy. But I like him very much because he is a true friend. Funny ideas often come to his head. And he is really fond of adventures.

Кадр 20

And who is he? Brave and strong, clever and honest, he is very fond of nature. He is a true friend of his animal friends. And I must add that he does his best to help them.

Кадр 21

Do you like to read detective stories? I like them very much. I am very fond of the stories about Sherlock Holmes written by A. Conan Doyle. Have you read any of them? To what story is this picture?

Кадр 22

Many children are fond of legends of Ancient Greece. I think that we must know them because their heroes are often mentioned in literature. Have you ever read "The Labours of Heracles"?

Кадр 23

Look at these pictures and describe the labours of Heracles.

Кадр 24

As to me I must say that one of my favourite legends is “Jason and the Golden Fleece”. Isn’t it wonderful to read about the “Argo” sailing through the gap between the rocks? And it is really exciting to learn how Medea helped Jason to get the Golden Fleece.

Кадр 25

Legends from the history of Great Britain are really fine. Have you read about King Arthur and his knights? The famous Round Table was used by them to show that all were equal. King Arthur fought against the Anglo-Saxon invaders.

Кадр 26

The Sword in the Stone” is a legend about King Arthur’s childhood. He was a page in the great castle of Sir Ecter and worked hard helping the castle carpenter, polishing armour and sweeping the castle yard.

Кадр 27

Then came a wizzzard. His name was Merlin. He began to teach Arthur changing him into a fish, than into a bird, then into a squirrel... Arthur learnt much and became very clever. His knowledge helped him very much in the future.

Кадр 28

The day came when all the knights went to London to choose their King. There was a great stone in front of the church door and there was a sword in it. It was written on the stone: “The man who can take this sword out of the stone is King of Britain”. Only Arthur could do it. And he became the King.

Кадр 29

As to me I think that the most interesting book is “The Tales of Robin Hood and His Merry Men”. When the Normans conquered Britain they took away lands and houses, money and cattle from the Anglo-Saxons.

Кадр 30

Robin Hood and many other Saxons, who were oppressed by the Normans, went to live in Sherwood Forest. They fought against monks and Norman barons, took money from the oppressors and gave it to the poor people.

Кадр 31

Robin Hood, the national hero of Britain, was described in many poems, stories and novels. A fine Robin Hood Museum is built not far from Nottingham.

Кадр 32

As my friend is keen on history he reads novels by Walter Scott. You must know that the writer was born in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. By the way do you know that Edinburgh is the twin-city of Kiev?

Кадр 33

Walter Scott deeply loved his native country and in many of his historical novels he wrote about the fight of Scotland for its Independence. What novels by this great English writer have you read?

Кадр 34

My friend has given me some Walt Disney’s comics. It was real fun to read about Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Uncle Scrooge… I have seen a lot of films about them and it was not difficult for me to read those comics.

Кадр 35

Last year I read a very interesting book. It was “Prisoner of the Ant People”, a fine fantastic story. From that day on I began to look for such books. They are really wonderful.

Кадр 36

We can learn a lot about new lands and other countries and people from books. They teach us to love Motherland and to respect its past, to be kind and clever, noble and honest, brave and truthful.

Кадр 37

Books are our best friends. But what about us? Are we friends to books? Do not make dog’s-ears in the book! If you don’t know what dog’s-ears mean look at the picture.

Кадр 38

Remember Golden Rules: Do not make marks on the pages with a pen or a pencil. Do not tear the pages of the book. Do not draw on its pages.
